According to our red Reader's Handbook, a character is a person, animal, or an imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story.  An author can develop a character by describing several aspects of the character:
  • how the character looks
  • how the character acts, feels, and talks
  • how others feel about the character
  • how the character interacts with others
  1. After reading the first quarter of the novel, choose one word to describe the main character of the story.
  2. Next, explain why you chose that word.  Use an aspect from the list above to help support your word choice.  See the example below.
  3. Finally, respond to a classmate's comment.  Agree or disagree with their word choice and explain why.

I chose the word 'caring' to describe Timothy from the novel, The Cay. I chose this word because of what he said to Phillip on the raft.  He said, "Put your 'ead back downg, young bahss, an' rest awhile longer.  Do not look direct at d'sun.  'Tis too powerful."
I agree with Sam's comment about Timothy being 'accepting.'  He shows this when he said"..but I true tink beneath d'skin is all d'same."

  9. I would say that Mia in one word would be artistic just by the way she acts, feels, and talks. I believe that the reason that she is such a good artist is because she can see colors.

  10. I would decribe Mia as misunderstood. Not a lot of people understand wat she is going through. At least in her area.

  12. hey, in the 2/4 of the book i think that the way jenna acted when mia told her about her color seeing was un called for, i mean that i would be upset if my frind keep something like that from me but i wouldnt give her the silent treatment i would support her like her pearnets are supporting mia :) P.S I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

  13. I think that Mia is creative becuse she i a wonderful artist! and how she has a color seeing disablity. i think it was disipointing when mia was faced with 2 doctors that didnt belive about her disiblity.

  14. I desribed Mia as creative because she sees colors and is a great artist and thinks of very fun mission adventures. It is very unique to be creative with a disability . I think it was sad when two of the doctors she went to see didn't beleive her. It was sad. I can't wait to keep reading!!!

  15. I think Mia is not understood when she explains to her parents what she has for the first time and she thinks they think she's crazy. I must diagree with because she is going a bit into Jenna's perspective and not as much in Mia's. I can't wait to read on!

  16. I would descibe Jenna as sensitive and self focused. Because when Mia was going through a real tough time in life and she had finnally told jenna about her seeing colors, then jenna got really mad at her. I think jenna was just thinking about herself and that Mia didnt tell jenna about her colors. She didnt even care about the fact that this was being really hard on Mia and Mia was very confused about her disorder, she thought that her best friend would understand.

  17. I think too many people call what she has a disability or disease. It is just a condition. It is definitly not a disease. Well to me... I would so llove to have her condition. She is so right that if she didn't have her disability then life would be bland. I don't think people that don't see colors and shapes for sounds and words don't understand as much as the people that do have that condition. Maybe it is very special to them.

  18. i think that the doctors didnt need to tink that Mia was fakeing i thought that doctors are supposed to belive what their paintens say because that doent help the situation. i feel sorry for beth having to get thta lotion for her poin ivy

  22. One word i think id use for Mia (main character of mango shaped space) is self consious, but willing to be outgoing and open if she knew that people wpuld understand. The reason i said this is because she has kept her synethesia a secret from everyone in her life, even her family.
I disagree w/ Andi S's group because i dont think that she is depressed...i mean yeah, she doesnt like how nobody else is like her, or has her condition, but shes not depressed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i dont think mia(main charcter) is depressed. and shes kind of self~consious, doesn't really like being different till mia found the other people like her. also, is likely to tell people who will understand and not think she's not crazy or has cancer or have middle~age syndrom(or however you spell it). so i think mia is brave, happy, and proud to have what she has.

    i also agree w/fiona

  24. The charector Mia had a fight with her best friend Jenna. They got into a fight beacuse Mia had not told Jenna about the fact that she can see colors. Jenna then went behind her back and told her other friend Mias secret. At this point Mia is still mad at Jenna, but all Mia whantsd is to learn about her new discoverd deises.

  25. Is anyone donw with the book yet?????I am it is a very good ending but sad...very emotional it goes from happy to sad and well just read!

  26. I think Mia has a Person vs. fate conflict because she can't control her synthesia. I would probably feel just like her when she discovers her synthesia-shocked,excited,confused- a mixture of feelings. I am not sure anyone else posted for confict on this blog so I can't agree or disagree with anyone yet!

  32. Thank you Emily L! haha I read my comment and all the other comments and I think that all the random comments and 'OMG I like, love this book!' are ok because I love this book too. I agree with Savannna, I think that Jenna isnt really being a good friend right nokw. I think that she is actually kinda a brat, but, if Mia likes her and loves her as a friend than that is ok I just think that Mia deserves better from a friend and I think that Jenna is really lucky to have a good friend like Mia

  33. i think that jenna is not being a very good friend when she finds out that mia has that condision at first she wont listen to her and i think that she is kinda self-focused on her and her party not that i hate jenna but i think she sould be a better friend katie s 6 block

  34. I think that mia(main character) is being misunderstood because not alot of people have what she has. No one really understands what it is like to have synesthesia. So i think her family and Jenna are trying to help Mia as much as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Fiona B. because i would call Mia anything BUT depressed, she likes what she has. I think she feels special and unique. Some people at school kind of give her alot of attention too. I think that Mia is very brave, strong, and a really good friend. I think that Jenna shoulld've understood about thwe disorder better. I DON'T think Jenna was a good freind about it AT ALL.
