The plot of a story is the action.  The plot revolves around a conflict or problem.  There are five main types of conflicts:
  • Person vs. person (problem with another character)
  • Person vs. society (problem with the laws or beliefs of a group)
  • Person vs. nature (problem with force of nature such as a blizzard)
  • Person vs. self (problem with deciding what to do or think)
  • Person vs. fate (problem that seems to be uncontrollable)
That struggle builds until it reaches a crisis or a turning point.  That moment is the climax.
  1. Describe one conflict in the novel.
  2. How would you have reacted if you were facing that same conflict?
  3. Respond to a classmate's comment about the conflict.
Example: I think that the main conflict in The Summer of the Swans is that Charlie wanders off and Sara has to go find him.  This is a a person vs. person conflict because she is having a problem with another person.  I also think it might be a person vs. self because she had to decide what to do about it.  I think I would have done the same thing.  I would have felt too guilty if something had happened to him and I didn't do anything about it.

  1. I think that the main conflict of the story A Mango Shaped Space is that no one believes about the disorder that Mia has. She thought she was going crazy and even the doctor and physchotherapist did not believe her. I would have felt the same thing if i had a disorder called Synesthesia and not even the doctors believed me!

  3. I think one of the important conflicts in the story are a person vs. fate conflict. Since Mango died , in which I thought was very very sad, Mia can't get a hold of herself. And the reason Mia hasn't really soaked in the death of her grandfather is because she thinks some of his soul is in Mango. So when Mango died she realized that now she has completely lost her grandfather. But on the other hand I think it is so exhilerating that she got to meet Adam....what will Jenna's party turn out like? Can't wait to keep reading!!!!

  4. After my cat dying I would be pretty upset because Mango was thought to have some of Mia's grandfather in him so the other part has Mango in him. When the cat dies it is like losing two people....I would react just as Mia did.I probably would cry a lot and want some time alone.:)

  6. I think that the main conflict is that Mia has a condition that when she figures out she has it she doesn`t thinks that since Jenna told people about it. So she thinks that people will not treat her the same. I think Mia conflict is a self vs. self based on that.

  7. i agree with jenna. and i also think its person vs. person because what she has mia can't really talk to anyone about this. until a little after she found out what she really had, and that other people had what mia had, she was alone and kind of had to do things her way and struggle to do school and that since she wanted to fit in, it was hard for mia to get past her condition and be like others. but now she kind of is feeling better about this because shes not alone on this journey anymore.

  8. The main charater in the story is Mia.The conflict in this story is that Mia has a disorder and her mom doesnt believe about it until Mia and her mom go to the docter's office to see what is wrong with her.The thing is that her disoder has made it easier to learn at school because she can see colors and shapes. Also, her friend Jenna is mad at her because Mia didnt tell her about her disorder even though she has had it since 3rd grade(she hasnt told anyone about it.)If I was Mia and I had this disorder I think it would be pretty cool.I agree with Jenna.

  9. i think that the conflict is charecter vs.self and charecter vs. world becuse mia is faceing all the doctors and she is frustrated with everything that has gone on ( something happends with mango :) )

  10. You all seem to have very smart things to say. Nice job! I believe that the conflict is person vs. self. Mia is trying to come to terms with who she is. There are many plot events which support this such as her experiments with accupuncture and her interactions with Adam. I think that another conflict is about Grandpa's death. Mia was very close to him and never dealt with his death. The plot events which support this center around the painting of grandpa, the grave and Mango's health.

  17. Be Careful! Some of you have said that Mango dying is the conflict. I disagree. That is considered a plot event. The conflict will be the over arching problem that Mia is dealing with. Go back and revise your thinking please.

  18. the conflict is mia is struggling with her condition. i agree with emily lasko how she said mia is trying to come to terms with her condition.if i was in this situation i would think that i am who i am and i dont care what other people care about me.

  19. I agree with Alorra T. because this is also persom vs. self because she is having a tough time with her condition. She is still teying trying to find herself and who she is. Some people think she is crazy! She is also person vs.fate she cannot control these. It was just a condition she was born with. But she likes it, and does not want to give it away.

  20. I think the type of conflict in the book is a person vs. self because Mia is trying to figure out where she belongs. If I were in Mia type of situation I would probably feel how she's feeling. I agree with Emily L., and Mrs. O'Brien. Emily Koval 6th Period

  21. I agree with Jenna R., because her conflict is, person vs fate and i also think its person vs self. Person vs fate beacause she cannot control the disability that she has. It would be an amzing but extremely complicated thing to live with. It's person vs self as well because she is against herself with her didsabilty. Even she doesnt want to except herself for who she is all though she is completely normal. Now ive only listed the ways and examples of like, different conflicts.
I think when the main cinflict starts is when no one believes what she has is real, even the doctors. She had to go to three doctors just to figure out what she really has and that must've been really hard for her. But all in all she really enjoys what she has after she realizes that other people have it as well. thanks for helping me understand the book better guys!!!! And your blogs are all interesting.

  22. i think the conflict is no one really knows what was wrong with her in the beginning. Some thought she had cancer, going crazy, has middle aged syndrom. I think they were trying to find out what wqas wrong with Mia, but not going to any proffesionals who actually knew what was wrong, the othersonly listened and asked her questions. So I think that was the conflict.

  23. I think the conflict is that no one knows how mia feels about her problem and as we get closer to the end of the book we find out that mia is finally mia is accepting her self the way she is and when mango dies some thins happen to herself and she still accepts herself the way she is.

  24. I agree with fiona becuase i also think that the conflict is person vs fate, becuse that she has her condition and its hard for mia dealing with everything that has gone on! did anyone finish the book?? the ending is so sad! and i think that mia is puting the balme on other people too becuse when she was at the meeting and what happend betweeen her and Adam, becuse when mango died she blamed Adam she said "Adam is such a jerk becase if he hadnt kissed me then i wouldint have been out side and mango wouldint of gotten out!" that is her words straight from the book so i also think that she is blaming other people for mango's death, Mia is also makeing it soo hard on herself becuse she thinks that she killed mango but i dont think that is true.Too me i think that i wasnt anyone falut becuse anyone in the family could acedently let mango out side when they wernt watching like when mia was back fron geting acuepunchture and when Beth and brent were on the porch and they were talking mango could of slipped out the door, and also he could of gotten out when mias dad had to bring her the painting. i know it was awhile ago but still he could of been out side for awhile so its a possible chance that theese things happend!

  26. I think my thinking has evolved along with yours. That is why I say I learn with my students! The conflict of a story is introduced in the exposition-- at the beginning. It is an over arching problem or goal that is dealt with throughout most of the story. Okay so I now think that the conflict of Mango Shaped Space is Mia accepting herself for who she is. To a lesser degree it is also about Mia being accepted by others.

The climax of a story is the turning point. That action packed or emotional scene that causes some type of change. I think the climax of Mango Shaped Space is when Mango dies.

The falling action is where the problem is solved or the goal is reached. I think the falling action of Mango Shaped Space is when Billy Henkle and his mom come to visit. During this visit Mia's colors come back and she celebrates who she is. She accepts herself and it seems as if her family accepts her as well.
